Who’s Ellis?
Well, I’m a northerner from Preston. But I’ve probably told everyone it’s Manchester.

What is your position at Biergarten?
I’d say I’m an all-rounder at Biergarten. I do a bit of everything.

How long have you worked at Biergarten?
2 seasons so far

How did you discover Biergarten?
I found out about Biergarten trough a friend. Went down to check it out and fell in love.

What do you think of Biergarten as a place in the city?
Biergarten is that kind of place to go with friends. Good beer, music and service! It’s by far one of the best places to visit. In winter, Biergarten creates that’s cosy warm feeling, with games and dark beers! So it’s an all round good place to visit if you’re in the area!

What do you think of the visitors who come to Biergarten?
The people who come to BG are defiantly up for a good time! As we have a large selection of beers available we tend to get a lot of people who like a good beer which you wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else.

You have a lot of knowledge about speciality beers, why is that?
I feel to sell a special beer, one must have knowledge about the beer to really give our customers an experience. Where the beers from, the type and of course, the taste!

What do you think is the best beer at Biergarten and why?
I think in my opinion. The best beer we ever had is De Dochter van de Korenaar Noblesse, it’s a pale ale with sweet notes. Or the millionaire from wild beer which is a chocolate stout.

What is your favourite dish in the kitchen?
Favourite Dish is probably at the moment is the French onion soup. Honestly can’t think of anything more perfect in the cold weather.

What is your favourite event at Biergarten?
By far the best event is the Silent Disco! Probably the best in the area. A battle between bars!

What are your duties at Biergarten?

I have been working at Biergarten for 4 years now. I started as an all-round employee behind the bar and on the terrace. To keep the work challenging, I have taken on some management tasks since last summer.

What do you like most about Biergarten?

As an employee, I am most proud of the busy summer evenings that Biergarten has to offer. There is a lot of variation in the events, some events are very popular. Silent disco festival and BlokBlok for example.

As a visitor, I find it much more pleasant to come on a relaxed weekday or evening. The atmosphere is totally different, very relaxed and friendly. Perfect to enjoy a nice special beer with it, because we have plenty.

How do you still try to create entertainment for visitors?

In the winter we have fewer events at Biergarten, but we’re still open for 4 days a week. (Wednesday to Saturday from 4 PM to midnight) Luckily it is a season that brings warmth and cosiness in dark and cold days.

Guests can come by for a board game, shuffle board, nail hammering, cornhole, beer pong or sit down in the living room where Mario kart can be played on a real Nintendo 64. The menu is adapted to winter delicacies and hot drinks. In short, it is a completely different setting from Summer. Luckily there are heaters all over the terrace so I don’t have to suffer from cold when I’m at work.

What’s your high score with Mario kart?

Unfortunately, none of my high scores stayed at the top of the charts after a week of gaming by the fanatical guests.

If you have to reveal a hidden gem from the winter menu, which dish or drink would you recommend and why?

For a delicious and surprising dish on the menu, I would go for the onion soup. It fits perfectly with the cold weather, fills well and tastes great. For a drink, I would recommend our new special beers. Especially for the winter, we selected some more exclusive beers with different flavours and limited stock certainly worth a try.

Isn’t it terribly cold to work outside in the winter? How do you deal with this?

First of all, get well dressed. But we have converted the terrace with a lot of heaters to provide warmth to every table.  If it starts to freeze, there will be an extra shelter from the wind. A large fire pit is also in the planning. Shortly said: there is always a warmth at Biergarten!

What are your plans for NYE this year?

Since a few years, we organize an intimate New Yer’s Eve party in Biergarten. Over the years it gets bigger and cosier. I don’t mind working during New Year’s Eve. It’s always fun with colleagues and of course we also pop a bottle of champagne when the clock strikes at 12 o’clock.

Who is Diewertje, how did you end up at Mess and what is your role?

My name is Diewertje. I have been working for Mess for about 6 years now. I started my career at Biergarten, after which I left to Ayla for a short adventure. I also spent some time at The Suicide Club. Eventually I ended up at Biergarten again. I became manager here 5 years ago and I alternate between the summer and winter season.  In the summer you can find me in Biergarten and in the winter at Ayla.

Which season do you feel most at home in, winter or summer?

The summer season is the most enjoyable time to work. The people are happier, the energy is more positive, and I can get a nice tan while at work. I love the summer evenings when there is a salsa band playing in the Biergarten, the variety in the program also ensures that there is always a different kind of people coming to Biergarten.

Why does working at Biergarten never gets boring?

Even though I have been working as a manager at Biergarten for 5 years, things don’t get boring. After the winter break in March it is always takes an effort to create a new, friendly and productive team with whom you can take on the summer season. Biergarten itself is also changing. This year, self-tapping points have been placed on the terrace that we can use in the summer. This has reduced the hustle and bustle at the bar on a summer Friday night, something that was desperately needed!

Radio station Operator has been added a few years ago, we have been able to place fixed containers and much more. We did good work the past few years.

Where do you get satisfaction from in your work?

I really like the chaos that can occur in the Biergarten. Sometimes you work on a Friday with a solid team and you manage to get through the evening with the whole team. But sometimes it may be unexpectedly busy, and if you are short of staff things will get though. When we’re done at the end of the evening I’m really proud that we fixed the chaos, the real teamwork vibe.

In the winter you don’t work at the Biergarten, how does that work exactly?

In winter, the busy period starts at another Mess restaurant: Ayla. I like crowds and chaos, which can certainly be found at Ayla in the winter. During the cozy winter months, you will find me mainly as a visitor at Biergarten to play a game or to eat onion soup. Except with New Year’s Eve! Every year Biergarten organizes a very cozy and intimate New Year’s Eve party. I think it’s great to swap Ayla for Biergarten for one night.

Tip: New Year’s Eve at Biergarten. Pre-sale tickets are now available

Who is Jorn?

You have probably seen Jorn around Biergarten. This is not surprising, since being the founder of graphic design firm almost Modern who designs all of Biergarten’s merch, posters, menus and more; music programmer at Biergarten Rotterdam and dj MeSoJorny, Jorn is largely responsible for Biergarten’s look, sound and feel.

Taking into account that Biergarten pilsner is his favorite drink, you’ll find him hanging out where the sun marks the spot on his days off.

Next to being a Biergarten Legend, he is one of the co-founders of Operator Radio(alongside Jeff SoloMr. Nice GuyOfra BeenenPatrick Marsman) who are broadcasting from the blue container on top (yes!) of Biergarten. So, let’s dig in a bit more in what this radio station and Jorn are all about.

How did Operator come about?

Mr Nice Guy plugged the idea of having an online radio stream like you’ll find in many cosmopolitan cities like London or New York to Jeff [Solo red.] and me.

We were looking to fill the need of a place where Rotterdam DJ talent would have the opportunity to play. In Amsterdam you have Red Light Radio, but Rotterdam didn’t have such a platform yet.

Nowadays Amsterdam DJ’s will travel to Rotterdam to play at Operator.

We invited Patrick Marsman and Ofra Beenen to join, to have a broader representation of musical styles, pitched the idea to Mangrove (now We are you) who supplied us with a team to realize the website and live stream. Operator launched on april 22nd 2017.

How do Operator and Biergarten mix?

Like Operator, Biergarten is a place where innovation happens; and both attract diverse crowds.  So, after Operator was founded and we were looking for a place; Biergarten welcomed us after we pitched our idea and we’ve been here ever since.

It also creates opportunities for collaborations. Biergarten Soundsystem play tunes at Operator; and Operator DJ’s play live sets at Biergarten, which creates exposure and opportunities for these DJ’s to be booked elsewhere. This way Operator and Biergarten function as stepping stones for DJ talent.

Do you see opportunities for Operator and Biergarten?

I think a cross over between Operator and Biergarten has potential. The exchange of energy. This is the case for all of District East [the area that Biergarten and Operator are situated in, red.] There is huge potential for collaboration between people, genres and sectors.

We already do that by inviting cultural partners (e.g. gastronomic platform De Buik van Rotterdam and theatre groups like Club Gewalt and Urland or by collaborating with cultural partners like museum De Kunsthal, cinema Kino and filmfestival IFFR).

Through co-creation we make the city grow.

Sequels zijn zelden beter dan het origineel, maar in de Terminator-serie is dit toch echt het geval. Dit meesterwerk van spektakelregisseur James Cameron is de perfecte actiefilm. Hasta la vista, baby

The first 85KM to Col de l’Iseran is a constant incline; with percentages that reach double digits in the final 3KM to the top at 2770 meters, which hasn’t been climbed for twelve years. After the decent to Val d’Isère the riders are rewarded with a final climb along the Chevril reservoir to Tignes at 2113 meters – ouch.
